School Schedule

Student’s grades are failing, Kids are sleeping in class. Seemingly irresponsible kids are roaming our student’s halls. For FWCS middle schools, there is an underlying problem for everyone…. The school schedule. For years it has gone unattended, unchecked, but now it has gone too far.

Results of the school schedule seemed to have nothing to do with scores and results, but not anymore. Studies show that early school hours causes “poor academic performance and a serious health concern.” A technical report also shows that sleep-deprived teens tend to eat more carbs and fats, with every hour of sleep that is lost increasing the odds of obesity by 80%. The article on the internet also states that, quote “Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also likely to suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts.”

Students need at least 8-9 hours of sleep. A current middle school student wishes he could go to sleep 9-10 hours but due to the school schedule he only gets less than 8 a day. If the hours change he said he would have more energy and a more positive outlook for school and would most likely get better grades. In my opinion sleep is way more important than a hearty breakfast. Why are our school systems worried about free breakfasts when were too exhausted to even pick them up?

Main thing is, if you are complaining about classroom results, don’t point your finger at the students, especially if it’s first period, due to their tiredness and lack of focus that is from that. It would be very beneficial for a change to occur and if they need more busses, why is the tax money going to a roundabout that isn’t a must have, and focus more on the schools. Take care of our students. They are our future. Fantastic sleep reflects good grades. Just give it a chance.
